"Hamas will never recognize Israel's right to exist, but will negotiate conditions for a long-term truce", the Damascus-based head of Hamas' political bureau said in comments published
Friday, a week and a half after a Hamas victory in the Palestinian parliamentary elections.
"We will never recognize the legitimacy of the Zionist state that was established on our land," Khaled Meshal told the Palestinian newspaper al-Hayat al-Jadida. "If
you [Israel] are willing to accept the principle of a long-term truce then we will be ready to negotiate with you over the conditions of such a truce."
But indications that Hamas activists have been involved in Qassam attacks made it unclear whether a truce would preclude attacks on Israel, even while it remained officially in effect.
Security officials said Thursday that Hamas activists were involved in launching Qassam rockets from the Gaza Strip at Israel after the organization's victory in the elections, despite its policy
of maintaining "calm" in the territories. "
